Frontline Admissions Report | SDS Spring Series of Admissions Events at Home and Abroad
From February to March 2024, the School of Data Science at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) has launched a series of activities for undergraduate and postgraduate enrollment. The school has carried out 9 large-scale admissions activities in China, and has set foot in overseas Southeast Asia for admissions for the first time. It has held 3 tour in Southeast Asia and conducted 1 consultation meeting in a local middle school.
For undergraduate admission, the professor team of SDS participates in front-line admissions activities. Professors from the school conduct admissions sessions for Yueyang No. 1 Middle School, Guiyang No. 1 Middle School, Northeast Yucai School, Dalian Yuming High School, and middle schools in Shenzhen, Shenyang, and Dalian. Each information sessions attracted hundreds of students and parents. In addition, teacher representatives from the school conducted one-on-one student consultation meetings at Sekolah Pelita Harapan Middle School in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, to introduce the SDS’s profile and undergraduate major information to students.
Regarding the admission of postgraduate programs, professors from SDS visited the University of Science and Technology of China and conducted exchanges in various aspects such as student education, graduate training, and academic research. SDS and the Department of Information and Intelligence of the University of Science and Technology of China have reached a consensus on cooperation and launched the School of Data Science’s master’s and doctoral admissions and doctoral promotion programs at the University of Science and Technology of China. In addition, the master's project team of the School of Data Science carries out a series of QS World Grad School Tour activities at home and abroad. The tour is a global event. It is based on academic reputation, employer reputation, number of teacher citations, international research network, employment and a variety of criteria including competency outcomes and sustainability, showcasing the world's top universities. SDS conducted a total of 4 touring exhibitions this time, including in Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia and Hong Kong. The exhibitions attracted a total of nearly 1,500 students and parents.
Undergraduate Admissions Schedule
Yueyang No. 1 Middle School
On March 15, Li Haizhou, X.Q. Deng Presidential Chair Professor and Executive Dean of the School of Data Science, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), launched the “Famous Teachers in Famous Schools” event at the Yueyang No. 1 Middle School, Hunan Province, and launched a lecture themed on “Language and Speech Processing—The Development of Artificial Intelligence”. In the lecture, Professor Li introduced "Natural Language Processing and Speech Processing" in simple terms based on his own scientific research and professional experience, involving "Global Development Trends of Natural Language and Speech Processing Systems" , "The current situation of the industry and its future development potential and competitive advantages" and other topics. After the lecture, Professor Li introduced the basic situation of the university and admissions policies to the students. The atmosphere was lively and triggered a strong response from the students present.


Guiyang No. 1 Middle School
On March 16, Yan Ming, associate professor and assistant dean (Undergraduate affairs) of the School of Data Science at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), held a city information session and Guiyang No. 1 Middle School admissions information session in Guiyang City, Guizhou Province. Professor Yan introduced the basic situation of the School of Data Science to nearly 200 parents in the two sessions, including the school’s faculty, scientific research strength, major introduction and enrollment policies.


Middle Schools in Shenzhen
On March 16, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) held a forum for parents of senior high school students to discuss the secrets of improving science scores and the choice of science and engineering majors. Yu Tianwei, professor and associate Dean (Student Affairs) of the School of Data Science, and Yu Tianshu, assistant professor, represented SDS in participating in the forum. The event attracted nearly 400 parents. Parents showed great interest in the topics shared by professors and expressed concern about how to relieve students' stress before the college entrance examination. Professors carefully answered parents' questions and put forward effective suggestions.


Middle Schools in Shenyang
On March 29, Li Haizhou, X.Q. Deng Presidential Chair Professor and Executive Dean of the School of Data Science, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), held a city information session in Shenyang, Liaoning Province.


Northeast Yucai School
On March 29, Li Haizhou, X.Q. Deng Presidential Chair Professor and Executive Dean of the School of Data Science, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), launched the “Famous Teachers in Famous Schools” event at Northeast Yucai School in Shenyang, Liaoning Province. Middle schools in Dalian
On March 30, Li Haizhou, X.Q. Deng Presidential Chair Professor and Executive Dean of the School of Data Science, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), held a city information session in Dalian, Liaoning Province.


Dalian Yuming High School
On March 30, Li Haizhou, X.Q. Deng Presidential Chair Professor and Executive Dean of the School of Data Science, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), launched the “Famous Teachers in Famous Schools” event at Yuming High School in Dalian City, Liaoning Province. A lecture themed on “Language and Speech Processing—The Development of Artificial Intelligence” was held.


Sekolah Pelita Harapan
On March 8, the admissions representative of SDS and professors from HSS visited Sekolah Pelita Harapan, a group of five International Christian schools located in the heart of Indonesia-the megapolitan city of Jakarta. It maintains a long-term cooperative relationship with CUHK-Shenzhen. Teachers from the university conducted one-on-one consultation sessions for middle school students. Local students showed a strong interest in the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) and actively participated in the consultation sessions to learn about the university and major-related information.


Postgraduate Admissions Schedule
University of Science and Technology of China
On March 18, Li Haizhou, X.Q. Deng Presidential Chair Professor and Executive Dean of the SDS, and Associate Professor Wu Zhizheng visited the Department of Information and Intelligence at the University of Science and Technology of China and held an admissions information session, attracting nearly 200 students. SDS and the Department of Information and Intelligence of the University of Science and Technology of China have reached a consensus on cooperation and launched the School of Data Science’s master’s and doctoral admissions and doctoral promotion programs at the University of Science and Technology of China.


Vietnam Tour
On February 28, the School of Data Science of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) held a QS World Grad School Tour in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Konstantinos Courcoubetis, Presidential Chair Professor of SDS, gave a keynote speech: "Arising International University in the Silicon Valley in China", which caused It attracted widespread attention from nearly 400 participants present. Professor Konstantinos introduced the basic situation of China to Vietnamese students, and started a discussion based on Shenzhen's geographical advantages and Shenzhen's high-tech industry. He further introduced the overview of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) and the advantages of the postgraduate program of the School of Data Science. Many Vietnamese students attending the conference were very interested in coming to China and Shenzhen for further studies. They actively interacted with the teachers present, and there were a large number of on-site consultations, showing their high concern and exploration of the topic of Professor Konstantinos's speech.


Singapore Tour
On March 6, the School of Data Science of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) held a QS World Grad School Tour in Singapore. There were more than 200 participants at the tour. The atmosphere of communication between our school's admissions representatives and consultants was lively. A large number of consultants gathered in front of the university's booth. There were frequent interactions between admissions representatives, teachers and consultants.


Jakarta Tour
On March 7, the School of Data Science of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) held a QS World Grad School Tour in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. There were over 700 participants, and the venue was full of enthusiasm and energy. Participants actively interacted with the university's admissions representatives, consulted for information about the postgraduate programs, and showed strong interest in M.Sc. in Data Science.


Hong Kong Tour
On March 17, the School of Data Science of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) held a QS World Grad School Tour in Hong Kong, attracting the attention and participation of nearly 200 students. Yao Jeff, Presidential Chair Professor and Statistics Area Coordinator of SDS, participated in this event and introduced the school and programs overview to the participants in the Hong Kong tour. The atmosphere at the event was warm and the response was strong.
