The Advanced Biometric Research Center (AdBRC)
The Advanced Biometric Research Center (AdBRC) based on the School of Data Science, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, made up of 2 Professors, 4 post-doctors and several PhD candidates is under the direction of Prof. David Zhang. As one of the world leading labs, AdBRC mainly focuses on three issues: Security Biometrics, Medical Biometrics and Social Biometrics. Until now, numerous achievements have been gained in both academic and applications. Referring to Security Biometrics, we have designed various systems including the Fingerprints System, Palm-prints System, and Wrist/hand veins System etc. Particularly, we are the first group who apply Palm-prints to person identification, which is capable of achieving more robust and accurate performances compared with the existing state-of-the-art approaches. Referring to the Medical Biometrics, we focus on exploiting the computer techniques to measure Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). According to the theoretical analysis of TCM, we have designed multiple data collection devices for Tongue/Face Diagnosis, Pulse Diagnosis, and Odor diagnosis etc. Furthermore, many feature extraction and classification algorithms for TCM diagnosis have also been studied. Referring to the Social Biometrics, we focus on facial beautification, feature extraction and modeling. Until now, we have also established Facial Beauty System to measure how beautiful a person is.
Currently, we have published 500 papers with more than 30,000 citations, built several generations of human surface feature collection devices and datasets for TCM and palm-print recognition. In order to conduct data-driven research, we are building the currently largest dataset for TCN and palm-print recognition. We expect to finish the dataset in this year and start to conduct research on TCM bigdata and palm-print bigdata.
The director of our center is Prof. David Zhang, who has been a Chair Professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University where he is the Founding Director of Biometrics Research Centre (UGC/CRC) supported by the Hong Kong SAR Government since 2005. Currently he is Presidential Chair Professor in Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen). He also serves as Visiting Chair Professor in Tsinghua University and HIT, and Adjunct Professor in Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Peking University, National University of Defense Technology and the University of Waterloo. He is both Founder and Editor-in-Chief, International Journal of Image & Graphics (IJIG) and Springer International Series on Biometrics (KISB); Organizer, the first International Conference on Biometrics Authentication (ICBA); and Associate Editor of more than ten international journals including IEEE Transactions and so on. Over past 30 years, he has been working on pattern recognition, image processing and biometrics, where many research results have been awarded and some created directions, including palmprint recognition, computerized TCM and facial beauty analysis, are famous in the world. So far, he has published over 20 monographs, 400 international journal papers and 40 patents from USA/Japan/HK/China. He has been continuously listed as a Highly Cited Researchers in Engineering by Clarivate Analytics (formerly known as Thomson Reuters) in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, respectively. He is also ranted about 80 with H-Index 103 at Top 1000 Scientists for international Computer Science and Electronics. Professor Zhang is a Croucher Senior Research Fellow, Distinguished Speaker of the IEEE Computer Society, and a Fellow of both IEEE and IAPR. In 2020, he was elected to the Royal Society of Canada, the highest honor a Canadian scholar can achieve in the Arts, Humanities and Sciences.
