On April 11th, the SDS UG Career team successfully held the fourth session of the Alumni Talk series - the European countries. In this event, we invited Ms. Shen, who is currently studying at the Technical University of Munich, and Mr. Hong, who is studying at the Imperial College London, to share with us their experiences of studying and living in Europe.
Ms. Shen, currently studying at the Technical University of Munich, shared many advantages of studying in Germany. For example, the affordable cost of living, seamless job search or to apply for permanent residence in Germany (European Union), and exceptional social welfare. In addition, she mentioned some of the advantages of applying for PhD programs in the European region. She also candidly pointed out the issues that need to be taken into account when studying in Germany, such as the necessity of learning a new language and the overall salary level. Based on her own real-life experience of studying and working in Germany, she encourages students who wish to stay in Europe to continue their studies or work and who emphasize work-life balance to choose Germany as the destination of study.
Mr. Hong, a graduate from Imperial College London, shared his experience of living in London. Academically, despite the rigorous curriculum, it allows students to have exposure to research and PhD opportunities. He highlighted the abundant internship opportunities in Europe, and he had found an internship in Switzerland through alumni connections. Mr. Hong also mentioned that the current employment situation in the UK is not optimistic, with the salary threshold for work visas increasing and the number of eligible jobs decreasing. He advised students to keep an eye on domestic employment opportunities, join Chinese student job-seeking support groups, and utilize the university’s latest job information and advice.
