The second session of the Alumni Talk series was held on April 2, where the SDS UG Career Team had the pleasure of hosting alumni who completed their studies in the eastern part of the U.S. During the sharing sessions, these alumni generously shared their insights on living, studying, and working in the eastern U.S.
One of the speakers, Ms. Wei, currently employed at Ant Group in data science, shared her experiences at Carnegie Mellon University, covering various aspects of academic life and employment in North America. She encouraged students to actively submit resumes and expand their networks through platforms like the Career Service Center and LinkedIn. She particularly emphasizes that when considering educational choices, students planning to apply for jobs in the United States after graduation should prioritize the duration of the program and the destinations of graduates. Internship experience in North America is undoubtedly a major advantage for job applications.
Another speaker, Ms. Chen, a graduate of Columbia University, discussed the benefits of New York City, including its convenient location and ample internship and job opportunities. She shared her success in securing a summer internship through Columbia University's Career Center. She suggested that classmates should strive for excellence in their studies on campus because outstanding academic performance not only helps with scholarship applications but also provide more opportunities to communicate with professors.
The alumni also delved into the variances in job search strategies between North America and China, underscoring the significance of written tests in the recruitment processes of Chinese companies. They recommended that students practice and gain interview experience to navigate the challenges of job hunting effectively.
