严明现为香港中文大学(深圳)数据科学学院助理院长(本科生事务)。他于2005和2008年在中国科学技术大学获得数学本科和硕士学位,2012年在加州大学洛杉矶分校获得数学博士学位。2012-2015年,他先后在莱斯大学的计算与应用数学系和加州大学洛杉矶分校的数学系担任博士后研究员。2015-2022年,他在密西根州立大学的计算数学、科学与工程系和数学系担任助理教授(2015-2021)和副教授(2021-2022)。
他的研究方向为大规模优化算法及其在图像处理、机器学习和其他数据科学问题中的应用。他在人工智能与机器学习会议(包括ICML、ICLR、NeurIPS 和 AISTATS)以及 IEEE杂志(TPAMI、TSP) 和 SIAM 杂志(包括SIIMS、SISC、MMS)等发表文章超过50篇。他于2020年获得脸书教授奖(Facebook Faculty Award)。
